Dave Richardson, the CEO of the International Cricket Council (ICC), does not believe that Test cricket has lost its glow, but he said that the five-day format needs to be encouraged slightly to maintain interest among fans.
Richardson's statement comes in the defense of the recent statement of ICC Chairman Shashank Manohar, who said that Test cricket is gradually being "over". "Cricinfo", quoted by Richardson, said, "To say his (Manohar) meant that Test cricket needs more relevance."
He said, "Yes, there are some unmatched battles from time to time, but if you are not a part of the teams representing or admirers, then there is no real interest in that particular series (between fans at the global level)."
Richardson said, "And with the onset of the World Test Championship, interest will increase and it will help boost the Test matches globally, no matter who the team is playing. That was what he was saying. Test cricket needs to be extended, this needs to be promoted and hopes that the World Test Championship will be the answer.
